Culture, arts and heritage are what give a community its identity. They tell the story of where we came from, bring people together, support local artists and businesses, and give future generations something to be proud of. A strong community isn’t just about roads and buildings — it’s also about preserving the character and history that make Thorold unique.

I believe arts, culture and heritage are essential to building a strong sense of community and identity in Thorold. Our history, our connection to the Welland Canal, our historic buildings, museums, artists, festivals, community organizations and local traditions are important assets that should be protected, promoted and made accessible to everyone.
As a councillor, I would support developing a comprehensive culture strategy. Thorold already has a Recreation, Arts and Culture Grant program and a Heritage Advisory Committee, and the City is moving forward with the new Museum & Cultural Centre at 16 Towpath Street (old firehall). We need to continue to build on this.
My priorities would include supporting local artists and cultural organizations, protecting significant heritage properties and stories, ensuring the new Museum & Cultural Centre becomes an active community and tourism destination (this has to be done right), encouraging public art and cultural programming.
A vibrant cultural sector can bring people into our community, support local businesses, attract visitors and create greater community pride. I would look for partnerships with the Niagara Region, provincial and federal governments, educational institutions, cultural organizations and the private sector so that we can leverage municipal investment rather than relying on taxpayers alone.
I'd listen to the people already doing this work in this industry!
My background in media relations and community communications (Toronto Blue Jays) has also given me experience in telling stories, building relationships, promoting organizations and connecting communities with their audiences. I believe those skills can be valuable in helping Thorold better tell its story and showcase the people, places and history that make our city unique.
